No, AFAIK, he said he would only charge commercial & govt accounts, not individual private ones
The Free individual accounts are THE PRODUCT. Why would he do anything to lose those ? That would reduce Shitter's value
The commercial + govt account will have paid licenses so they can broadcast to the public
Honestly, I think that now premium services are going to slowly become the norm. The ad driven model sounds really good in theory, but then you end up having an outsized influence from advertisers which means that either you can't say what you want to say, or you have to tailor your service in such a way to maximize ad clicks, or any number of ways that end up optimizing the ad revenue rather than optimizing the user experience.
The big question though is going to be what is he willing to put on the table for three bucks a month? I do pay for YouTube premium, the ability to download videos to my phone and the ability to watch videos on all my devices without ads are compelling, and YouTube music is a nice Fringe benefit. I do pay for Amazon prime every year, and for me prime video is a marginal benefit, but the ability to purchase all kinds of things with free shipping is worth it for me. I do pay for netflix, though I have to admit the utility of Netflix is slowly dripping away. At first it was fantastic because you could go find any show that you wanted to watch at any time and watch it. These days, the increasing fragmentation in streaming and the fact that Netflix seems to be more interested in appeasing political groups than creating a service worth paying for is slowly chipping away at their value proposition.
For a lot of people it might be a really good value. Probably not for me, I doubt that they are going to be able to provide any kind of service that's going to be better than me running all my own services. On the other hand, I guarantee you that me running my own services costs me a hell of a lot more than three bucks a month.
Lol, why would I pay for something I refuse to use for free. It's still going to be a dumpster fire.

You know, Elon doesn't give up and he dreams big. He fought all big Autos 15 years ago when they tried to kill Tesla, as well as the lobbyists who tried to force him out of states like NJ.
The fucker made a 100% REUSABLE space vehicle.... that's been the stuff of science fiction for the past 100 years. No one ever managed that. Not NASA, Soviets, Chinese, Europe, Indians, Japanese... nobody could make it real. Elon Musk made it happen.
Compared to that, tearing Google + Apple a new asshole should be a cakewalk. I am really hoping he makes his own Mobile OS and distributes to major vendors like Samsung, without charging obscene licensing feels like Google or he finds legal loopholes to sue these shitholes into the ground
