I remember a woman who was falsely accused of killing her niece. Everyone thought she crushed or asphyxiated her somehow. She was like 1200 pounds. The county had to hire contractors to remodel the house to get her out, and when they did, they had to rent a moving van to get her to the hospital since she couldn't fit in an ambulance, and they felt she was too medically unfit to take to jail. They also remodeled the courthouse to accommodate huge defendants.
At the hospital, she was found to have had like 12-20 life-threatening conditions most of which would have killed her soon. So they essentially rescued her.
Then the M.E. finished their report on the baby's autopsy. It was shaken baby syndrome. That let the defendant off the hook. She couldn't lift her own arms, let alone shake a baby. And it was suspicious that her sister and BIL disappeared around that time. They fled back to their home country. The DA found that suspicious and filed for extradition. Mexico gladly cooperated. I figure they would. They know they are poor and if we can try their criminals, that is something they don't have to do.
