World war 1 wasn't caused by some major conflict of good vs. evil, it was caused by a tiny and trivial inciting event causing an entire continent of pacts and alliances to trigger a domino effect of alliances and alliances until the world was at war.

Jefferson, in his inaugural address on 4 March 1801, declared his devotion to "peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none."

And look at us -- getting dragged into some regional conflict between two countries we have nothing to do with. For what? Sparking a world war isn't going to protect world peace.

It just doesn't work. History shows that this type of alliances never help their members when they need it. For example: the Allies refused to help Poland and Czechoslovakia when they were invaded by the Germans because they didn't want to make Hitler angry.
