One was meant to keep black people out of society, and the other is meant to provide community for marginalized folks (in this case black folks, but any marginalized group can have a safe space). And yes, we still have racism and bigotry, but comparing something that was meant to further marginalize people to something that is meant to provide community is just silly.

It is not that though. Safe spaces doesn’t mean they don’t ever have contact from outside groups, it means they have a place they can take a break and know there is a certain cultural understanding. It is a vacation, not a permanent move.
