iamtanmay@wolfballs.com 3 years agoChina was in trouble just before the pandemic. The biggest property corp, Evergrande was going bankrupt, and govt bailed it out. The GDP numbers are fiction
Currently S Asian sweatshops (which got outsourced to cheaper places like Vietnam when Chinese labor became too expensive), are stuck awaiting Chinese raw materials. Hard to understand the point ? Sabotaging US this way will cost China. Companies were already moving supply chains out of Asia due to the pandemic problems, e.g Intel.
Chinese govt doesn't care about human health, looking at industrial deaths, pollution etc. Why would they care about nothingburger Covid ? Are they incompetent like Biden ? Is there more to the lockdowns, e.g. preparing for food/fuel riots ?
Time will tell wtf China is trying to do

It is hard to see how this will help China. It looks like things will only get worse there. The lock downs are clearly not working. They also put all the sick people together which is terrible policy. A sick person should stay home in bed instead they go out and spread their sickness to everyone else. And just get worse.
So that makes one ask why? It's not to stop the spread of covid. That is clearly not working. The leaders could not possible be that dumb. So there must be a other motive.

My understanding is they have a federal system. After scandals like earthquakes, Covid etc, people protest and blame regional govt. Central govt comes in as a savior, gulags regional admin and puts in a new "peoples'" govt. A good example is Wuhan admin in 2019, after ignoring that hero whistleblower doctor and massive fuckup. They were replaced by the Party. This way the Party short circuits nationwide upheavals.
If Shanghai admin is not replaced, Party is 100% supportive, consequences be damned.

The thing is, their fed has already been replacing the local governments. The is very central government driven. They have even banned other parts of china from seeing Shanghai weechat stories to try to curve the flow of information because the entire city is complaining daily.

I don't fully understand the autonomy of local govts... my impression was they are puppets of Central, only existing to be scapegoats when things go bad
Xi himself rose through the ranks of local govt... but maybe things have changed in last decades
