Xi himself rose through the ranks of local govt... but maybe things have changed in last decades

I think Xi had family connections going back to the days of Mao. Any stories about rising through the ranks are probably fake or exaggerated.

His dad fell out of favor and was gulag'd AFAIK. You could be right though, hard to tell what is propaganda
