It is the typical ploy employed by those who hold extremist views. Say something radical and wait for the reaction. If the reception is positive you continue on, if it’s negative, you just laugh and say it’s a joke.

Just to be clear. The radical view in this context is “metal gear solid is going political”
In this case, it very much was a joke.
