uranibaba@lemmy.world 1 year agoThis smells of copy/pasta BUT if GNU is the OS and Linux is the kernel, are all the so-called Linux distributions in fact not distributions of GNU/Linux but distributions of just GNU? Since they are changing the OS and not the kernel? Unless they are leaving GNU as is and changing the kernel, in which case it actually is a distribution of Linux.

Distributions often ship their own compiled versions of the kernel, with some options changed, but it’s still Linux. Same with GNU tools. But the main difference between distros isn’t their flavor of GNU tools or what kernel they ship, the difference between distros is actually all the stuff that gets layered on top like the package manager.
