It’s hard to justify going after media orgs. Especially the government justifying going after the media. The freedom of speech points to stopping government action in this exact case. This gives the perfect vector for corporate take overs. And now my media diet consists of comedians.

This is from the previous election cycle, but Sinclair stills owns and operates a swathe of these local media stations, and they have giving out bullshit for their employees to parrot on the air just like this the entire time. It’s a right-wing scheme that’s been going on since the first Trump admin allowed this to happen, and it has yet to get broken up. Thankfully, many don’t even watch local news anymore.
Fuck Sinclair.

there is precedent for the government ensuring balanced discourse on public airwaves with the fairness doctrine.

Sorta? It’s complicated, and it’s important to note that it’s been repealed in 1987. And even in its hay day, its was controversial due to the government deciding what was fair, rendering free speech obsolete.
No when the government wants to silence media, they usually turn to clerical infractions, and fines for other reasons. And other harassment behavior. Sure they may do it to stations i want gone, but it’s still scummy.

I did some contract work for Schurz Communications maybe a decade ago and they did the same thing. They pushed right wing scripts to all their 3rd market oultlets, and because there is little media competition in those small markets, people would take it as the word of god. It definitely opened my eyes to the how large and effective the propaganda machine is.
