Meet the Feebles (wikipedia
Released in 1989, this is an early-ish Peter Jackson movie (yes, the LOTR guy).
It’s a lurid and disturbing backstage comedy of a troupe similar to The Muppet Show.
I watched it with one friend in the mid 90s who, when it ended, stood, turned to me, and said “It is possible to go too far” before leaving the room.
Have you seen Jackson’s next film, Braindead! An over the top zombie comedy. I’ve only seen it once years ago, but I remember it being a lot of fun. In the US, it’s known as* Dead Alive*. Also check which version you’re watching, as its been cut in different ways in different countries.
For example, in the US the unrated cut is 97 minutes, and the R-rated version is only 85 minutes with many of the gore scenes removed. In the UK, it is the fully uncut 104 minute version.

I have heard of it but never seen it.

Most movies I’d think to suggest are fairly fringe ones. I’d assume people have heard of the others.
The Wicker Man (the 1973 version) is another great one made less fringe by the Nic Cage remake. Go in blind on that one if you can.
