Comment on Victoria’s CDS hits half a billion container deposits
Baku@aussie.zone 6 months agoEh, SA has had a CDS program since 1977, I imagine they’ve paid out a fair bit more. Also the funds for the CDS program aren’t coming from the governments budgets, companies have to contribute 10 cents into the program for every bottle/container they sell. So in reality, the government would probably make a profit from it considering how many cans and bottles don’t get recycled through the CDS.
Also, in case you’re from the other side of the pond, 50M AUD is only worth about 33M USD or 26M GBP, so it isn’t very much

Divided by the 6.6 million people in Victoria it adds up to $7.50 per person, over about 6 months.

Councils also can claim the deposit for anything received at a materials recovery facility.

Yeah that makes more sense. Probably half or quarter the numbers and you have a closer number.
I would love to know the total number that went to recycling plants in that 6 month period too
