I don’t like defederation, it’s pathetic that they can’t handle some instances not having the exact same culture as their safe spaces. But it seems to be catching on because users can’t block individual instances on their own.

Users can block communities (on any instance) they don’t like.

I understand the technical need for that feature. But I agree. It can, will, and is being abused.
