So what’s the frustration here? That it didn’t have 256Gb? I can’t see it in the photo.

it was a SATA 2.5" drive occupying where I wanted the HDD. I assumed a PC that shipped with a NVMe drive would have one.

I still don’t get it. That sata is still an SSD…

In general these are shipped with an NVMe and then the expansion slot is for a 2.5 inch sata sdd. So this has been modified at some point and the seller probably should have stated.

it's a 'refurb', listings for those by third-party sellers are usually lacking in details, just saying 'ssd'--not what type or brand. technically, op got what he ordered.

HP shipped it with an NVMe with the HDD caddy empty and I expected it. Maybe I’m a sucker. Idk I didn’t like it.

Looks like you got what you paid for. When you buy second hand, you always need to be very careful about the exact specs you’re getting and get that in writing. Then again, that doesn’t seem like a huge deal to me.

Oh now I’m worried about my order. Got an optiplex 7060 MFF on the way and ordered a sata 2.5inch SSD for expansion. Please be an NVMe!

you got me

it really depends on where and from whom you get it. i've seen laptops sold as 'brand new' that have been cracked-open by sellers and 'upgraded' to sata ssd from nvme (worked on one a few months ago a guy just bought as new off amazon; and i've seen more than a few 'refurbished' units (desktops and laptops) with cheap sata ssd used where nvme was available.

It has a 2.5inch bracket and M.2 slot looking at screenshots of your model. Seems you are good to go.
