Comment on Where does Wolfballs get advertised?
mayonesa@wolfballs.com 2 years agoUpvote/downvote sites attract losers who are mostly Leftist. That makes sense, since egalitarianism is cope for life failures.
Your audience is on Reddit, but they'll stay on Reddit, because to a loser having to make a new account every six months is just the price of doing business at any site he goes to.
Most normal people avoid the downvote sites because they know these are where fedora people go to be internet bigshots, which means their lives have failed offline.
That's a sick, unhealthy mentality and best avoided.
So my take is: remove the fucking downvotes (stop processing of enqueued events of this type) and you'll go farther.
Then: find a brand. You're a friendly and sensible person, but that doesn't make for a good brand. Slightly unhinged and moderately messianic does.
I would not, in any case, advertise on another free speech site. THEY ALREADY HAVE ONE. I spread this on Fediverse, Gab, and Grindr simply as an alternative to capture Reddit escapees, but I don't think much is going to come of it for anyone else.

Interesting ideas. Without downvotes there isn't a good reason to use Lemmy over Mastodon with groups. One reason ill probably host one if those too. Removing downvoting is actually in the site config and easy to do. People massively complain about sites that do that. And I had them disabled for a while but people complained. People mostly no longer here.
Branding is something I want to work on. We will get there.

I like the Fedoraverse, but it has a weakness: it is focused on the method of communication, not content, so good stuff gets ignored and it cannot retain users. It's not going to beat Twitter ever. On Twitter, the crowd raises up favorites; on the Fediverse, they get ignored. This is its fatal flaw.
Probably just the usual highly vocal minority of super-lusers.
Might help to separate the anarchy forums from the conservative and libertarian ones. Otherwise the place just stinks of libertarians, a.k.a. people who know the conservatives are right but aren't socially bold enough to state it.

These are good points. I think if we can get a celebrity to endorse one it might help. Having communication platforms that are censorship resistant by design gives users the faith they need to invest time in it. Its like windows VS Linux. Yeah there are fewer desktop Linux users. But without making Linux open source Linux would not have been the success it is today. It still hasn't "beaten" windows at the game of desktop, but by every single other metric it has beaten windows. Its slowly chipped away at server, phone, and embedded space to where the desktop is the only thing windows still succeeds at. And windows desktop is a horrible experience IMO these days so even that is in danger from Linux, Chromebooks, and macs.
I think libertarianism is the best political bias a site admin can have. Its about maximizing freedom for all. Conservative and Liberal types are all about which rights to limit for a better society.
More or less.
Reddit started about with a libertarian bias then went as you know to be what it is today.
In the federated world it might make since to have a conservative instance because we are less likely to build up a mega site by nature.
Its not like left wing people have no where to go.
In general, I looked at the available options and non existed that could fit my needs. Ruqqus was doing well before they started to ban everyone.
We might have to play the long game. Like piratebay did. Be consistent. Never have downtime. Slowly add new features. Some users will come and go but over time will will grow in usage. Build up name recognition.
If I can cause any pain to big tech. If I can take any of their power to censor away I will consider this platform a success. Its not about money, although if I could quit my day job I would have a lot more time to improve this place.

I agree heartily:
However, I think it also helps to have some branding.
Yes, which is why I think something more ideological, like resistance to centralization as a philosophical pursuit, is important.
