Like, “I’m against ethnic cleansing in Palestine but I’m not gonna boycott Israel because that could be considered antisemitic” or somesuch.
It’s basically trying to have your cake while eating it, too, like this guy, driving his Tesla while telling people he actually hates what it (or rather, Elon) stands for.

You can participate in society just fine without buying a car from Elon. There are plenty of alternatives, including fully electric ones, available.

But you can’t go back in time and unbuy one from a time before you knew how horrible Elon was.
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 years ago
Perhaps not, but believe it or not, you CAN sell your car and buy a different one instead. If you actually hate him that badly, that is.

And a person who already owns a Tesla can then discover that Elon is crazy, hence the bumper sticker.

They could sell the car and buy a different one if they really cared.
There are plenty of EVs available these days, including some that are just as fast and/or luxurious as a Tesla.
This is like driving a massive V8 truck with a “climate change is real” bumper sticker if you ask me. And I bet you’d have no problem seeing the irony then, would you.

So this dude can only hate Elon if he sells the car he already paid Tesla for?
MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 years ago
I’m just saying it would certainly be more convincing if he did.

Maybe you can switch cars whenever you want, but for most people, it’s a big expense. And wasteful if you don’t wait until you have to.
And if you bought a Tesla when you still thought it was a decent company, you’re probably the sort of person who is not a fan of being wasteful.

It’s a fucking Tesla, not a Hyundai. The absolute cheapest model starts at 40 grand. 75 if it’s a Model S.
Sorry, but I don’t think “it’s wasteful” is a valid excuse here.
