Republican electoral fortunes rely on the Evangelical Christian vote. Without them, they lose most of the time. But in the 70s, some Republican strategist realized they could use them to win, so this happened. It's a worthwhile read.

This type of stuff is mine blowing to me. I have a neighbor who claims to be a single-issue voter for abortion. She uses it to hand wave away terrible shit that Republicans do, and then says “yeah but they’re protecting the babies.”

I think she honestly feels like being anti-abortion is a core part of her identity. To hear that the whole anti-abortion platform was basically invented to excuse racism and avoid paying taxes is kind of mind blowing. Like, that’s a deeply held belief of hers that she probably thinks about every day and loses sleep over. Crazy how that shit works.
