There is a real and very well documented history of western capitalist powers doing everything they can to overthrow socialist projects. It's rather dishonest to equate the acknowledgement of survivorship bias in projects that do survive with McCarthyism.
The point being made here is that when a system develops under duress, it's necessarily going to develop negative qualities, and no socialist utopias will be possible until capitalism is overthrown as the dominant global ideology. Understanding the limits of what's possible given the current conditions helps set realistic expectations.
