Comment on Memes that sums up my experience with 4 of Resident Evil's action focus ganes

The thing about RE is that I only like the original game (and the HD edition of the Gamecube remake, and the Deadly Silence version was okay too). I just do not enjoy the format of action game that RE has been since RE2. I appreciate it for what it is, but the slower, methodical gameplay of the original release, with suspense building camera angles and sound design, has never been revisited since. And I consider that a shame. And the upcoming remake is probably going to become another action shooter if it is using the same over the shoulder camera.
I also only like Dino Crisis 1 for the same reason. DC2 was an action game, and DC3 doesn’t exist :)
I just wish there were more games that played in this slower way. It reminds me of old school TTRPGs. Nowadays they’re all about story and narrative and character arcs, but back in the day they still had those elements, but the gameplay was slower and more methodical. Preparation was more important, the meme of the 10’ pole, etc. Dungeon crawls were slow, you could never get through a dungeon in just one sitting. And with RE1, it plays pretty similar. Character movement is slow, enemies are more or less slow, the cameras build suspense, the doors open to build anticipation (and hide loading screens, novel for the time), etc.
IDK, I just find it more enjoyable than Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking the eleventy-millionth Spanish speaking dude (I think they spoke Spanish in RE, right? Maybe another language… I can’t remember exactly) and backflipping over chainsaws. Thats funny and has its place, I just prefer the original game.

I think you would probably like Flesh Made Fear, it’s a recent favorite of mine that captures that old feeling. It was clearly made with a lot of love for the genre
There’s everything you love and hate about them: two characters with multiple endings, tank controls, inventory management, backtracking, limited saves, fixed angle perspectives, bad voice acting, judicious conservation of ammo, and you can even do a knife only run (but good fuckin’ luck)
There are a couple of goofs, and the voice talent for the antagonist clearly loves his job and could have been a major villain in Saturday morning cartoons. But the humour doesn’t distract from the mutagenic horrors that turned everyone you ever knew into a ravenous shambling low-poly corpse
