Comment on Advice for moving to NY?

Plenty of good schools, and if you take a gap year first to establish residency, New York will kick you an extra $5k per year to go to a state university. And the job market is actually not terrible: GE in Schenectady, Regeneron in Troy, and Global Foundries near Saratoga have all announced expansions recently.

Wow this is very solid, I’ll have to see what schools they have in the area. Is it really only a year in NY to get financial help from the state?

Yep, NY’s Tuition Assistance Program is available to anyone who has lived in New York for at least one year and enrolls in a SUNY or CUNY school. In the Capital District, that would include the Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, the Schenectady County Community College, and the University of Albany. There’s also certain programs that they’ll cover full tuition for as long as you work in the state for five years after graduation. And there are an absolute ton of private colleges in the area, if you’re not into any of the state’s programs.
And it’s a great area to be in. Like I said, two hours from the city, but it’s also near Saratoga and the Adirondacks. Lots of historical sites and museums, camping/hiking, and a ton of concert venues. Since it’s on the way between Boston and NYC, a ton of bigger acts will stop in when they’re touring.
