It kind of looks like a Smith & Wesson 500 which shoots a .50cal and would definitely explain why the pumpkin exploded into smithereens.
Or, bear with me, they’ve handled it enough and are familiar enough with it they know how to safely operate it.
Pointed away from any potential people, finger off the trigger (at least visible in the end), recoil was pretty well handled with a single hand, given that shot could’ve been a .357. I don’t know revolvers enough, and I can’t see the cylinder well enough either to tell the size or appx length of the round.

But they splattered pumpkin all over their car? I think you’re giving them more credit than they’re due.

Oh, boo hoo. They have to go through a car wash.

They could have put the pumpkin on a log and not? Is it normal gun safety protocol to be shooting in the direction of your car? The logic of the situation doesn’t add up.

The answer you are digging for, which will likely not satisfy you, is, “It’s just fun my dude. Who wants to argue about every little thing?” Pumpkin go boom. Smile and move on. Enjoy life, not everything is a fight.
