Comment on Mental health professionals rarely allow you to talk about the socioeconomic factors too
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 5 days agoThat theory sounds good, and you’re right that it’s simple to understand, but in reality it doesn’t hold water. Everyone I know who goes to therapy, reports that their therapist is totally open to saying that the world is just fucked up, and that’s a big part of the problem, and putting blame on economic or political sources. So this idea that therapists direct away from that, regardless of the cause, just seems to me to be a total falsehood propagated by people who haven’t even spoken to therapists. Its totally mythological as far as I can tell.

I don’t see how this contradicts anything I said. Ascribing societal failings to the world just being fucked up is actually a pretty good example to my point. The therapist is there explicitly to help make changes in an individual so they can better participate in society. Their position has no ability to facilitate systemic change even if that happens to be their intention. No therapist is going to help you self-actualize into the best revolutionary you can be, how could they?

This entire post and thread is about how therapists won’t mention capitalism and the housing crisis and instead say that it’s something like depression or a personality disorder that causes someone to feel bad or suicidal. Do you think this claim is true or not? What I am saying directly contradicts that.

We have pretty different perceptions of this entire post and thread then. I read the text in the image specifically as a medical professional lamenting that their position pushes them to diagnose a disorder in the individual rather than validate their difficult and unpleasant perceptions of the systems they’re operating in. Acknowledging someone’s experience is well within the scope of therapy, but at the end of the day they can only facilitate change in the individual not the society. It will never say in the patient notes “this guy seems fine, society’s what’s fucked up!” because… That’s in no way therapeutic and has nothing to do with a therapists job. I still don’t really see the contradiction, but this is starting to feel more like goal-oriented litigation than a nuanced discussion so I’m going to wish you well and move on. Have a nice day, fellow poster :)

I honestly can’t tell if you’re trying to be non-confrontational, but nothing about this entire interaction seemed kind of you. If you really have the intent to be nice to people online, and you really want them to be well, I advise you to result reconsider how you act.
First you tell me I’m wrong about therapists, that the truth is “honestly not particularly complex”, act condescending by saying “obviously” this and that. And then when I try to be nuanced about what we’re talking about, you ironically complain that this isn’t a “nuanced discussion”, then cut the discussion short…
So I don’t really appreciate you making me out to be the confrontational one, when you basically came in here, implied I’m a simpleton, and left as soon as I tried to explain myself.

My previous therapist literally recommended that I join a leftist organization to meet people with similar views

I’m glad to hear that and hope it helps :)
But speaking more broadly, wouldn’t they reccomend anyone seek whatever structure and community they’re compatible with? Aren’t you being guided towards stability, and doesn’t your ability to participate itself reinforce a status quo?
