You’ll feel differentially if you ever travel a great distance somewhere, and spend some time there.
There exists a pretty good network of decent charging now on most main routes in North America for example. But it’s still the secondary areas that need work now. For 90% of your travels (more like 98% in our case), the home charger gets it done. But the whole charging infrastructure that we need is still not completely there yet.
We drove across the continent this summer. The drive back and forth across was surprisingly quiet and uneventful. But spending 4 weeks at my parents and at our in-laws, in a more rural town setting, was…painful. We have a mobile charger, but of course my in-laws didn’t have an outlet nearby, my parents do, but it wasn’t working. Our hometown has three public charging stations, all painfully slow (5+ hours). It made for a tough few weeks. Still doable, but I’d hardly call it convenient.
As for surveillance, that ship left the station a long time ago, and it’s not just EVs, it’s all vehicles. That’s a completely different topic though.

God I hate the car industry. By the time I’m old there will be very few 2010 cars left and all of them will be priced to the moon…

The thing with those new cars, is they very seldom actually ever make it to market in any sort of volume. I’ll be able to take the idea of the Slate truck a lot more seriously, when I start seeing them on the roads. Until then, it’s just dreams and concept exercises (which are highly important, don’t get me wrong).
I’m also more excited for the concept of the Telo truck, but I question how they are going to get it to market through the safety requirements. The slate truck was an exciting concept at first, but will almost certainly get more bloated between concept and the marketplace. The marketplace might also still realize their actual appetite for the most basic accoutrements of a base model vehicle is still pretty low. There’s always those few guys that want to roll the windows up, and crank over their engines by hands, but that crowd also doesn’t tend to buy new vehicles but once every twenty years. Once the trendy “cool” phase is over for the Slate, should it arrive, I worry about it having any sort of staying power. People bitch about those huge screens in their face, but I fear they also very quickly bemoan the loss of them once they realize they can’t LOL or cruise Spotify as easily as they are used to. It would be better for humanity if this happened though.

The only reason those are irrelevant to me is there are so few of them that no mechanic will ever work on them in my experience in the EU… Mechanics HATE cars they almost never work on.
