I don’t see the issue. I have a friend I hang out with once a year for a day and we don’t talk eachother a single word for the remaining time.

My sixty-something year old dad has one friend. They’ve lived like you and your friend since high school, sometimes missing a year or two. They may also call each other for birthdays (sometimes) but I think I’ve seen Uncle Todd twice in my life.
