Game developers are following the same trendline as software developers.

Be lazy in your programming, chug unnecessary resources, and let the end user spend their way out of it.

As an example, I think Clair Obscure is one of the best games I’ve played in years, but those unnecessary, egregious particle effects in EVERY single environment with NO ability to just turn them OFF are development malpractice.
