White Americans say the same thing about themselves - that they don’t use spice. Salt is spicy, we love mayonnaise, etc.

There are several comments about Americans here. And as far as the real world, it’s a very well known trope in America. So much so, it became a news story in the 2016 election, when Clinton was accused cultural appropriation for claiming she always carries a bottle of hot sauce in her purse.
