Very true! :) if you have additional ways of showing that a mail server was operational in 2005 I’m happy to hear them :)

Email archives would be best. If not that, look to see if any of the scanners like Censys or Shodan have records back that far showing SMTP running.

If the DNS records for the mail server were missing, it would suggest that they didn’t intend to receive mail, even if a mail server were actually up.

But the records could’ve also been left up long after the server was taken down just out of laziness or mismanagement.

Certainly, and likely. In which case, the DNS records would tell us nothing.
But we can draw a completely different conclusion if the records were taken down deliberately.
