not@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 days agoThat’s the income tax. The employer also have to pay “Arbetsgivaravgift”. Whenever something is bought there is a 25% VAT (except food which is taxed lower). Sometimes you have to pay taxes on the price where VAT is already added.

These tax structures exist in the US and other places as well. Besides, the meme referred to income tax so the fact that other taxes exist isn’t immediately relevant here.
And anecdotally, the overall cost of living was less for me in Sweden than it is here in Canada. Taxes don’t tell the entire story.
