I think in The Matrix the fact that he stands out as a little different and inconsistent adds significantly to the allegory of the movie. I really don’t think the main character in a 90’s movie about the trans experience calls for someone who blends in.

That said he doesn’t stand out all that much. For example, Sandler would be, while i think hilarious(at the time), a completely narrative breaking choice. On the other side, DiCaprio would have “acted” well but broken it as badly by following the assignment too well.
