Damn, this just led me down a rabbit hole that made me discover that 48% of Australian high school kids go to private schools … What’s going on over there? It’s like 5-9% in the US and Canada.

are you sure that means the same thing? i’m pretty sure in britain “private school” actually means a school run by the state, which armericans would much more sensibly call a public school.
