papalonian@lemmy.world 5 days agoFor what it’s worth, I went to college before I was ready and it didn’t do anyone any favors. I think college only helps form structure for those that already have a good foundation for it; there’s so much freedom that if you decide to just fuck off and do nothing, there’s generally no repercussions until you’re failing the class you presumably paid to attend.
If you go into it planning to use it as a tool to help build structure and find a purpose on your own, it can be good. But it’s not like the military or something where they’re going to force you to comply. I spent most of my freshman year in college sitting in my car in the parking lot because I had other stuff going on and I was too stressed out / anxious to go to class. Then took nearly 5 years to rebuild the courage to go back. If I just waited a year to sort my shit out before trying to go to college fresh out of high school, I probably would’ve had a degree by the time I started the second time.
