Amish communities can have phones if they vote for it amongst themselves. The one I saw was a community landline. They had just one in a little shed along the driveway.

SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 weeks agoCory Doctorow explained in one of his articles that the Amish don’t avoid technology indiscriminately, they weigh the harm against the use. His example was that it’s bad when electronic communication replaces face-to-face contact, but it’s no good either if you can’t contact a vet when your cow falls ill.

Yeah, my understanding is that typically a shopkeeper or someone like that might have an old-style cell dumbphone, without the Facebooks and stuff.
