  Here in Germany the notice period is legally binding both ways unless both sides agree to end the contract early.

  Usual notice periods are 1, 3 or 6 months. It isn’t rare that you have to actually work to the end. And you know what? It’s fine. Noone expects you to go above and beyond anymore at all. You are expected to prepare all your work to be handed over to colleagues. You’ll train people who will take over your position if someone is found in time. You get to take remaining legally binding time off and overtime. On your last day at work you’ll usually being cake and there is a tiny goodbye celebration thing going on.

  Work only has to be as toxic as you make it tbh. Sadly many companies choose very toxic.

  Sometimes if you are let go the employer will put you off duty for the remainder of the notice period. The still have to pay you though. Just without working which is nice.

    Must be nice. Here in the US you can just walk in one day and get told you’re fired and have to clean out your desk.

    Does German law or contract account for stuff like if a person working with children is found to be abusing them? Like that’s an instance where you really need it done immediately. (Or if that’s not a great example because they get suspended pending a court trial, insert some other example.)

    Also, in the UK and probably other countries, when you leave work but still get paid for that period it’s called “garden leave”.

      While I agree that that’s a shitty norm that we have here, it also goes both ways. The first job I had out of college, I had a coworker who was a pretty solid engineer, and kept getting handed random bullshit assignments. She tried for months to get management to stop fucking her over, to no avail. The next time she was in a meeting and they tried to foist another thing on her she was like “ok, nope. I’m done”, left the room, left the building, and never came back.

      At the end of the day, there is a hard limit to how far you can push people, and you will definitely know it when you hit it.

        We usually have a probation period where each party can just say this isn’t for them. Then they can just terminate the work agreement from one day to the next. It’s usually a few months.

      Of course you can be suspended and fired for gross misconduct but the bar is pretty high.
