MnemonicBump@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 days agoBecause school is expensive and time-consuming and I’m already working full time to BARELY get by. I love school (well, I love learning, but it’s simply not an option for me at this point in my life. Obviously I’ve looked into it (and have a fair amount of student debt to prove that I’ve tried more than once), but I always have to make the choice between going to school or eating and paying rent, and I usually want to eat and have a place to live.

agh, that really sucks. i thought trade school was free in all western countries
i know university education isn’t always free, but trade school costing money is news to me and news that doesnt make any sense in my head

We have a federal program in the U.S. called Job Corps that does provide free technical training in a WIDE variety of trades, but it’s woefully underfunded these days, and not well known due to having a reputation as the sort of place wayward youth go to instead of juvenile hall, and you have to be between the ages of 16 and 24 at the time you start.
Free education isn’t really a thing here.

i hope the DSA folk get more influence there, they seem like the only force actually capable of doing any real change within a reasonable time period

I mean, yes, but the DSA has had a problematic and interesting history (I say this as a former member/member at large). And it’s important to remember that they’re not a political party and can run no candidates themselves (which would never work if they tried), so their best bet is to try to turn the DEEEPLY entreched liberal Democratic Party, which is like pulling teeth.
