When I was a kid it as <10 minutes of ads per hour on TV and (I think) 12 minutes per hour on radio, roadside billboards were illegal in my county, and the local newspaper ads were mostly relegated to the back page and sunday inserts.

There were also no blatant ads pre-roll at movie theaters and productions got bad press for having product placement.
