Short answer: yes, basically.
Long answer: Well I’m an anarcho-communist so the US should have never become a country ever. Countries are bad, full stop.
But I would definitely have preferred it become a socialist country over a capitalist one. The Great Depression would have made for sensible timing since labor was more powerful back then. However, my view is that the best time for socialism (anarcho-communism) is all the time, i.e. there would be no point waiting for a “Great Depression”, because capitalism is a system of death and destruction, so intentionally allowing it to continue is a form of human sacrifice.

Have you heard of “Reds! A Revolutionary Timeline”? It’s an alternate history story (in which the PoD (point of divergence) is 1901 when William McKinley didn’t get assassinated) about the US becoming a socialist country during the Great Depression. It’s a good alternate history story if you’re into this kind of thing, and it’s on SufficientVelocity.

Thank you for the recommendation. I’ve never heard of it. I’m not an alternate history guy but I do need to beef up my fiction consumption.
