Comment on What IRC options are best recommended, and just work? I have seen a few people discuss lounge as an option, but wanted to see thoughts here too before I commit to setting something up for my family.

Thelounge works easily. Are you sure that IRC is the right choice for a family though? Have you looked into Matrix?
