CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 7 hours ago@athatet gave a great summary, and the Civ games are the biggest mainstream example of 4X games. there are many sub-genres and lots of games that use it as a foundation but extend it in various ways, and Folk Emerging does that too by centering around nomadic gameplay and complex ecosystems

so I’m currently playing Foundation, I played Civilization a bunch and Civ2 a bit but mostly avoided that kind of game in favor of 3rd Person Shooters and like.
