This is true, but Dollar General also tends to move in after the economy is already hollowed out. You used to have vast distribution networks of local merchants and independent businesses. Now everything flows up to the Waltons and Bezos and Dollar General licks up the scraps.

I was not aware of this. A lot of these towns I see them feeding off of had their moment before I was born, so that’s a detail I missed
