Silinde@lemmy.world 1 day agoWhen there’s nobody worth voting for, I refuse to play their game. I’m a proud ballot spoiler. Some will say I threw away my democratic right, but when my right is worth as much as pissing in an ocean of piss, it’s not worth having. I’m sure plenty of people here feel some sort of victory for placing Cameron-Hiding-Behind-A-Red-Rosette into number 10 because “at least it’s not the other one”, and I likewise have the same feeling about leaving a message of dissent that a couple people will be forced to read.

Oh your a real rebel you are.
If you don’t vote for anyone then there’s no reason for any party to care about you. So your not doing anything by refusing to vote.

You speak as if these shithead politicians actually care about us and what we have to say. Sorry, but that’s utterly delusional, and one look at what’s going on in this country makes that very clear. Voting clearly doesn’t do anything, otherwise things would actually be changing now that someone else was voted in. So you can chalk it up to me being some edgy little rebel with a chip on my shoulder if you like, but I will continue to spoil ballots and talk shit to pricks in power until we actually get some real change or I’m dead, and I know exactly what one of those will happen first.

Yeah voting doesn’t do anything so apathy is clearly the solution to that problem. Jesus Christ, you do understand don’t you that if you completely disengage with political system they will ignore all of your complaints. The only way to achieve any kind of progress is to vote accordingly and there are progressive parties, you vote for those progressive parties and if enough people do it you get progress.
Of course the alternative is to just be a whiny pain in the arse, in which case you’re getting ignored.
But other than being the stereotypical stick in the mud, well done. You’re a genius.

They have no idea who I did or didn’t vote for when I complain about them, so it’s completely possible to both complain as well as not vote for anyone at all. A spoiled ballot indicates that you intend to vote, but that nobody running for election is suitable, which is exactly how I feel. Spoiled ballots need to be read by multiple people, generally including the candidates, in case they feel my paper indicates a vote for them. My spoiled ballots have been seen and sent a message to more people than an x in a random box ever will. So yes, I do think it’s a clever move to spoil a ballot as opposed to being a good little voter and putting my x in the box like the other ~99.7% of voters. If more people did the same, that would say more than voting for a specific person ever will.
