nimble@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 day agoPart of the the problem is that vegetarians don’t actually care about animal suffering and exploitation, and as a result some vegetarians will instead pick and choose what is vegetarian and what isn’t. I have a friend who is supposedly vegetarian but he does eat fish. That just confuses people since my friend doesn’t make it clear “this isn’t actually vegetarian, this is just something I’m going to eat anyway”

Why doesn’t your friend just call themselves pescatarian? Its a different diet style, that’s probably why people are confused…

It’s hard for me to know for certain because i do try to steer away from these conversations with my non-vegan friends to avoid conflict, but i think part of it is the moral framing surrounding vegetarian rather than pescatarian as more of a diet in his mind. He did recently decide to stop eating squid because squid are too intelligent for him to comfortably eat, which i understand pescatarians can do too but i think “vegetarian” just resonates more with him
