It’s highly unlikely the chimps would get drunk, however. It wouldn’t confer any evolutionary advantage, and, according to the authors, there is evidence in the common ancestor of African apes of a molecular mechanism that enhances the ability to metabolize alcohol.

That seems pretty unfounded. Whether being able to get drunk is an evolutionary advantage doesn’t seem like it would impact much whether that actually happens or not. Many animals get drunk when they consume large quantities of overripe fruit, and how could being drunk ever be an evolutionary advantage? IDK how likely it is for chimpanzees to find large quantities of fruit with higher-than-normal alcohol content, though. That said, a species that has been eating a lot of fruit for probably hundreds of thousands of years obviously doesn’t get drunk when individuals are consuming more or less the same amount of alcohol every day and spread it out over the day instead of consuming it all at once.
