Fuck caves lol. I’d climb a flat slab of a cliff and have but won’t touch caving.
Comment on The Nutty Putty Cave System

All fun aside … that was a horrible way to die.
Crawl inside a hole and get stuck … UPSIDE DOWN!!! … for 28 hours as you slowly and painfully drifted to your death and no one could help you despite them being right there with you.

It always surprises me how this will randomly pop up. I knew him through his wife. It was Thanksgiving time and we would get updates through her and her parents. We thought he would get out with that pulley system before it broke and he was going to be ok because rescuers could give him water.
I still feel bad about it because before hand we had a conversation about him going to the cave. I had made fun of the name of the cave and he had told me about how it was actually a difficult cave. He was really interested in the challenge of going through the tight squeeze of the birth canal. He had really looked forward to that trip.
I could not understand at the time how he couldn’t be removed even after death.

My condolences to you and your family
It’s all fun and games to talk about tragedies of unknown strangers like this on a random internet forum but every time I come across this story, it sends shivers down my spine to think of what happened. It was an innocent decision that led to a dangerous life threatening event.
If any thing good came out of it, it’s made me even more careful about life and taking unnecessary chances. I’m older now and I think about things more. I ride motorcycle and every time I get the urge to want to speed up, run through a tight corner or dip into a dangerous situation, I think twice, slow down and take my time or even just stop and let everything and the danger pass. I do the same when driving in a car down the highway … everyone can pass me, I don’t care … I can be late, I don’t care … I’ll even turn around and go home if the weather is bad or I just don’t feel good about it … as long as everyone is safe and sound, there’s no need to endanger one’s life, if we don’t have to.

It’s strange to have something like that happen to somebody you knew. Then about 7-10 years after I started seeing posts about it online as the story became well known. His death had scared me away from going near any caves, and that fear seems to register with a lot of people.
When it was happening it was not too scary, at first everyone was concerned but joking about how he got himself stuck. Everyone was hoping to get him back in time to enjoy what was left of the Thanksgiving vacation with an embarrassing but interesting story to tell.
The updates would trickle in over the phone, but once we heard the pulley failed we realized how serious it was. We were still expecting for him to get out until my family got the call that he had died. It just made no sense to get so stuck, and we hadn’t considered the danger of being upside down so long.
The guilt of making light of the name Nutty Putty sits with me though. But I know he took it seriously he just made a wrong turn. I actually didn’t see a map of everything until I saw the other post below. It’s sad he didn’t even get through the Birth Canal. Looks like he turned off right before it and experienced that nightmare instead of the part he was excited for.
