They let you cut down along the edge, then you can yank out the piece by the root (yes, ouch). Over time, the nail will stop growing along the edge. It’s a permanent solution.

I would highly recommend having it done professionally. It is a permanent change, and you don’t want to have it grow back incorrectly like this commenter
