orbular@lemmy.today 1 day agoDefinitely don’t put grease or oil down the drain if it is solid at room temperature. Even oil that’s liquid at room temperature is bad for sewage systems - they combine with non-biodegradable sewage waste such as wet-wipes (Don’t flush wet wipes down the toilet. Put them in the trash.) and turn into rocks that narrow and block the sewage pipes. See wiki on Fatbergs en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatberg

TIL. Thanks! Knew about wet wipes obviously.
Apparently it’s mostly an issue in the US due to this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_trap so might be more common knowledge there.

Most restaurants have a grease trap, but most houses do not.
Even what is naturally in the pan is often to much and you need to clean them with paper towel before washing. At least according to the Plummer I work with

Yeah so I think it’s okay because without the grease trap there’s no clog.
