Okay. Fuck it, this is the Internet. I’m gonna spend a few minutes as a Kevin Smith apologist, while I take a shit.
Please don’t take any of this seriously, but I’ll share it in case it helps you enjoy his films more.
I hope he’s not murdering anyone while I type this up.
“People like that movie (Clerks)? That’s craaaazy”
I think Kevin Smith has some crazy impostor syndrome.
Maybe I missed it, but i haven’t seen him ungrateful at his success, just surprised.
And it’s pretty normal to think one’s own earlier work isn’t as well done as ones own later work.
- It’s often wrong*, but it’s a pretty normal comfortable belief.
He wants nothing more than get into the disney money, that’s why he can’t say a bad thing about the new star wars movies, he praises them.
The only creative works I have ever seen Kevin Smith be critical of are his own. I take it as professionalism, and it fits his brand.
Kevin accomplished a lot for weed legalization, under the banner of “we should just let people enjoy things”.
That slogan has become a big part of his public brand, and I don’t blame him for sticking to it.
Now let’s pause and admit that in this entire defense of Kevin Smith, I didn’t actually really say anything nice about his movies.
I will say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of Kevin Smiths movies.
Sadly, by many people’s standards, I still haven’t said anything nice about his movies. It’s pretty easy to verify that I have bad taste in movies.

Also, Ready Player One is masterpiece!
…I should go add it to that thread of shitty movies I will defend.
I told you I have bad taste.
I will say, it was fun to see Spielberg do a faithful adaptation of a shitty little fun book into a shitty little fun movie.
