Comment on We should insulate Wolfballs against Communism
squashkin@wolfballs.com 2 years agoyeah I commented about this in another thread I think
I'm kind of ok with there being closed speech communities, as that's also something freedom allows people to do
so there can be an additional political position that people are for freedom on private communities as well; this comes up with libertarianism, that a person might be for not making certain drugs illegal but might not want people doing those drugs on a property they own (like at a restaurant). But another person might be for the legal drug use and allowing the drug use on their property. So likewise you could have communities on here that allow a moderator to freely moderate as they want to (which can be authoritarian) or you could force them to have to allow "free speech" on their community (which in a way is kind of authoritarian to force them to moderate in ways they don't want to - so I call this "authoritarian libertarianism"). Would be interesting to see an experiment of how a lemmy instance might look that has the policy that you can't censor anyone in any community (besides spam or illegal things or some obvious infractions) - I'm kind of interested in that approach, because it protects against rogue censorious mods, but also kind of for the opposite approach as it's nice to have the freedom to create a community designed how you like it to look.

Some closed speech communities. Some. You're aware of the cycle - Women want invited into men's spaces, women take over men's spaces, men go and create men's spaces, women get invited to men's spaces.
The same goes with free speech. If we get any traction, the left will see us as either a threat or a prize. They will use our free speech to poison the community and lock us out - then there will be no free speech. So we move and start another instance... rinse, repeat. Communists will do the same, because they have to. The can't produce anything of their own.
I was inspired by this story: https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/yamaguchi-assassinates-asanuma-1960/
OBVIOUSLY I am not advocating running people through with swords. I am advocating for the defense of freedom. If all of our communities get ban happy for wrong think then we become no better than Reddit or Lemmy. (Or Poal.)
I like that idea of no censoring. I don't know how to structure it so that it cannot be turned against Wolfballs. My first thought is that Mods can ban but bans are only 30 days at most.
If we have a banning committee.... leftists take that over, ban the right leaning accounts and Wolfballs becomes lemmy. If we disallow banning, being a mod becomes impossible because leftists can brigaid with spam/porn/distasteful posts and there is nothing the mod can do except remove the post. Wolfballs won't have nice communities, it will be trash. There is only so much 1 person can do.
Maybe the guiding principle should be less rules / less power / everyone fights it out in their respective communities.

yep
one thing I think about is when people have freedom they just need to work hard to make good use of it before commies or fascists use that free speech to destroy it, so it's kind of a responsibility to keep using freedom well to keep it
meh if one community bans then other people can create another community, the problem with reddit is that they are banning certain subreddits and then any clones of them which makes it impossible for people to compete against the bad subreddits on certain topics

I didn't think of that. That makes sense - they banned the Donald, so of course they would ban the Donald 2. I can be a bit slow at times.
