Because it takes a special psychological state for people to contribute to these actions. Sexual repression highly contributes to creating such mental states.

I don’t think the Greek and Roman pagans were known for sexual repression and yet they engaged in wars and conquests, including of the Middle East and Arabia. It has always been about resources and access to them.
