I just use newpipe on my phone, freetube on linux. I appreciate that you don’t need an account to “subscribe” to channels.

Same but there are times when I block YouTube on my DNS , newpipe stops to work. Is newpipe using YouTube’s API?

Obviously yes. Newpipe loads youtube website and parses the video info and files
