Mmmmm gotta get hated buuut…SMS Organizer by Microsoft. It’s in beta, but it works and works well.
Only thing that bugs me is I didn’t find search feature…

Is there a better SMS app on android? I tried switching to a FOSS app but I was missing messages and group messages completely didn’t work, so I went back to Google’s app.

No, it’s genuinely good, at least for now. My only issue I’ve experienced is that it would go to sleep and I wouldn’t get notifications anymore.
I switched to QUIKand have been pretty happy. It’s not perfect, but it does what I need it to.

Had that problem on my last device! Did all I could to prevent it, but nothing worked. Currently on samsung galaxy s8+ it just works, is not interrupted at all.

That’s something I’d like to find too. I’ve been using Textra Pro for years, but I have yet to find a FOSS alternative that rivals it

Signal used to be the best but they dropped SMS/MMS ages ago, and group texts are historically awful over SMS/MMS, especially when one or more users in that group have iMessage. I would either switch to Signal and get your friends to Switch, use Fossify Messages (very basic SMS/MMS client), or deal with the shithole that is the G app suite. I’m on signal personally, I only use SMS for verification codes at this point.
