One from Europe, one from the states by the looks of it. I also contribute to lemmy but not full-time like they do. I'll fix bugs or implement a feature if we need it.
Lemmy.ml censors like crazy, but the software is good and I agree with the goals even if our politics are not aligned.
The software is federated, meaning that each instance shares each other's data. If they aren't blocking each other. Lemmy.ml blocked us so you can't post to lemmy from here.
The more instances the better, more instances make it harder to censor and if one goes down post still live on another.
If you need help setting up a instance I'm always here and can walk you through it. It can be very cheap and you can increase resources as needed.

Dang, I might just try and set up an instance. Are there any advantages to owning the hardware the site is hosted on, as opposed to renting servers in the cloud? I've got a physical server (this--it's kinda old) that I'm currently trying to configure to work with the outside web (tricky 'cause of dynamic DNS from a residential address) but I don't have a vision for it otherwise. When I get it up and running I'll PM you for deets.

You could host this site on a 8 gigabyte raspberry pi fine. The problem with residential addresses is going to be your upload bandwidth.
If you have a 500 megabit or up upload bandwidth, I would self host and save the money.

Ahahaha, the upload is going to be my problem XD

Yeah that is to low. If you are the only one using it, it would be fine though. You can disable others from signing up. And that isn't a bad option. Hosting your own instance allows you to be in control of your account completely. You could use it to comment here on wolfballs and lemmy if they don't ban you for wrong think. So it you have a server lying around with extra processing power it's not a bad idea. It's pretty easy to deploy . It's all scripted out.
